Höchst

Höchst is Frankfurt’s oldest neighborhood, and as such, offers tourists and visitors alike many outstanding attractions, restaurants, and boutiques. Located on the northern bank of the Main River west of the city center, all of the historical sights of Höchst are easily reached on foot.

The Old Town of Höchst

The Old Town of Höchst offers perhaps Frankfurt’s best-preserved assemblage of original beam-and-mortar (Fackwerk) structures. In addition to numerous buildings from the Middle Ages, many Baroque and Neo-Classsic houses and buildings have been carefully restored and occupied in recent years. The town walls, Main River Gate, Customs Tower. Old Rathaus, the Greiffenclau Family House, the Castle Court and the Castle Moat each contribute to a picturesque setting unmatched in Frankfurt.

St. Justin’s Church

The Church of St. Justin is the oldest structure in Höchst. Indeed, it is the oldest building still standing in the City of Frankfurt. Originally built in Carolinian times, its columns and roof are of special cultural importance among the historical Höchst buildings. The Basilica of St. Justin’s which was consecrated in 850 AD is a rarely seen example of Middle Ages architecture and construction. The enormous Gothic choir with is original seating is equally interesting. The church’s organ which still uses numerous original pipes from the early 18th Century, produces a special sound well worth hearing. Kultours has permission to arrange concerts at St. Justin’s for true lovers of organ music.
